ABOUT
PHOTOHOUSE Detroit is a home for visual ART and the artists who bend light to tell their stories. Operating out of a once vacant property in Core City, PHOTOHOUSE is a collaborative effort between two Southwest born and raised artists, Xavier Cuevas and Demaciiio Soto. Growing up the two founders were fortunate to find art as well as organizations that were able to help mold and support their artistic pursuits, providing space and opportunity that they've both turned into successful careers and art practices. Now as adults the pair feel the city still lacks space and opportunity for the next generation of up and coming artists and instead of waiting for new and legacy organizations to fill that need have decided to take matters into their own hands in starting PHOTOHOUSE. From completing renovations and repairs on the house by hand and out of pocket to hosting a myriad of events, workshops, and exhibitions, everything happening at the house is as grassroots as it gets, by the community and for the community.
As a recording artist and painter Demaciiio hosts monthly artist showcases in which Detroit's burgeoning creative is given the space and freedom to sharpen and share their craft. Galleries, artists talks, musical performances, and cyphers make each event a one of a kind experience for first time guests and frequent visitors, drawing hundreds of creatives into the space each year.
As a photographer and filmmaker Xavier has led workshops, panel discussions that center on young photographers of color, photo walks, and film screenings that all center stories and storytellers that are often neglected from traditional art spaces.
As the space continues to improve and their base of support continues to grow year after year the hope is to continue the houses capacity to support and serve the community.
